Glow sticks vs. LED light sticks
Which one should you buy for your event, kit or handout? An honest side-by-side from a company that only makes chemical glow sticks.
The short answer
Choose chemical glow sticks for single-use handouts, safety kits and anywhere a battery, bulb or spark is a concern. Choose LED light sticks when you want something switchable and reusable. Custom Glow Sticks makes chemical glow sticks only, with no battery inside, so we will tell you plainly when LED is the better fit.
Side by side
| Chemical glow stick | LED light stick | |
|---|---|---|
| Power | A chemical reaction started by a snap and a shake; no battery inside | A battery and a bulb or LED, switched on and off |
| Switching off | Cannot be switched off once activated | Can be switched off and reused |
| Brightness | Fixed energy: brighter always means shorter, so you choose between a bright short glow and a dim long one | Steady output for as long as the battery lasts |
| Shelf life | Ages in the packet, so date and rotate the stock | Depends on the battery and the electronics |
| Spark and heat risk | No battery, no bulb and no spark | Electronics carry a battery and a switch |
| Branding | Printed sleeve or open line art on the tube, read by its own light | Printed body or a branded casing |
| Best for | Single-use handouts, safety kits, marking and marshalling | Reuse, repeated switching and a steady light |
Where a glow stick wins
A chemical glow stick has no battery to be flat, no bulb to fail, no switch to be knocked and no spark, which matters in places where there might be fuel or gas in the air. It is also the simplest handout: snap, shake and it is on. Glow bracelets and necklaces suit festivals, parties and school events, and emergency and safety glow sticks come in standard signalling colours with the manufacture date printed on the outer.
The trade-off to understand
A glow stick holds a fixed amount of chemical energy, so you cannot have one that is both the brightest and the longest-lasting. High-intensity sticks give a bright, short glow, while long-duration marker sticks keep emitting for much longer but are dim for most of it. It also cannot be switched off. If you need reuse or a steady light, LED is the better tool. More answers are on our FAQ page.
Branding both options
A glow stick is read by its own light, so heavy solid ink on the tube blocks the glow. Branded and printed glow sticks use a printed sleeve or open line art so the light passes through and around your mark, and the free mockup shows it before you approve.
The verdict
Pick chemical glow sticks for single-use handouts, safety kits, marking and marshalling, and venues where a battery or spark is an issue.
Pick LED light sticks if you want to switch them off and reuse them.
